Profile of the road race
The course starts with a 11km circuit in and around Vårgårda, which the riders will circle 4 times before moving onto a larger 53km route. They will end up back at the start for another 4 laps of the 11km circuit, making total of 141km. There are some gravel paths including in the larger lap (the red areas on the map above) and a 5km climb of around 5 to 6% at the 60km mark, but it’s not enormously challenging hillwise. The final laps show that a bunch sprint and/or late attacks are expected, and it’s hard to see any early break making it unless it’s fairly substantial.
There are just so many contenders who are in great form, and have back come from Rio without much to show for their preparation. The scourge of preview writing, the start list was only published a few hours ago so at first glance Blaak, van Dijk, Armitstead (Boels), Bronzini, Pieters, Hosking (Wiggle), Spratt, Roy (Orica), Kirchmann, Slik, Soek (Liv Plantur), van der Breggen, Vos, Koster (RaboLiv), Fahlin, Tagliaferro, Jasinska (Ale), Cecchini, Worrack (Canyon), Moolman Pasio, Lepisto (Cervelo), Kitchen, Leth (Hitec), Ratto (Cylance), Ensing (Parkhotel), Kessler (Lensworld), Bujack (BTC), Zabelinskaya (BePink), Barnes (Drops) and Siggard (BMS) seem the likely contenders, along with national teams from Sweden, Finland and Norway.
Blaak, Pieters or Vos I think, with Cecchini as an outside contender. It’s going to be bloody Boels again though.
